I am a Filipino, Social Studies for Kinder to Grade 2. Unit 2 of the “I am A Filipino” Series is about Community. This is the next installment in the series after Unit 1: Identity. As humans, we were created to belong to a community. Being part of a community tells us we are interconnected with people, organizations, systems, and activities present in our neighborhood, barangay, and local government. Being part of a community also means we are intertwined with both human and non-human creatures around us. How we manage our homes and businesses, for example, affects the natural environment and all other creatures whose lives depend on the environment’s health. Hence, this material also gives an overview of the ecosystem, as well as the activities and relationships keeping communities healthy such as business, trading, friendships, networks, and the pursuit of justice.

Understanding our role in our Community is crucial for our children’s journey towards adulthood. In Proverbs 22:6, parents need to train up their children in the way they should go. The purpose of training is so when the children grow up they would remain on the right path and be a blessing in their respective communities. As creatures and image bearers of God, we stewards of life and creation. We use our skills and talents to create wealth, help those who are needy, weak, and vulnerable, and preserve the environment.
